Basic SEO DIY

If you've just started out on your business venture and you're trying to establish your website in Google, SEO can be costly. We've put together some helpful tips for improving SEO yourself until you're ready to get dedicated support.

Fix 404 Links

Over time, web pages can be removed from your site, and URLs altered. The original page link may still exist in Google search results index. As a result, when someone tries to click the link a 404 error code is shown and they're unable to view the intended web page. Google will likely crawl the URL and mark it as an error. Instead of showing users a 404 page, an automatic redirect is better which will automatically funnel users from the old page to an existing page.

  2. Click the 'Export' button to download a CSV.
  3. Open Table.csv, create a 2nd column, and add the new redirect link for each row.
  4. Highlight all data in the first column, remove the main domain using find and replace but leave a preceding slash.
  5. Add a new first column and populate it with the text 'Redirect 301'.
  6. Paste all the values from the 3 columns into a code program like Dreamweaver.
  7. Adjust the spacing between the column values using the find and replace tool. A single space should separate each.
  8. Go back to Search Console and click ‘Validate Fix’.

Be sure to set image Alt tags

You may have seen the options to set alt tags before when uploading an image. Alt tags are a text description of an image that enables users with a sight disability to understand what's shown. The internet is for everyone so it stands to reason that everyone should set these correctly.

Here's how to do it:

  1. When uploading an image, look for an input box called 'Alt Text'
  2. Briefly describe the image shown in the 'Alt Text' box.
  3. If you're using WordPress, you could click on the 'Media' section to view all old images. You'll be able to cycle through each historical image quickly and set the alt tags accordingly.
